A Trip to the Keys- Part 1

May 30th - May 31st

This weekend we were headed south for warm weather and a little R&R. We meet our friend Terri in Baltimore and after a few short hours of sleep at the Patterson household, the three of us took off to the airport at about 5:30AM.

We made it into Ft Lauderdale around 10am, picked up our convertible for the long weekend and hit the road. We made it all the way down to Key Largo before our first stop, the Visitor Center.

We spoke with a nice guy in there and he gave us all kinds of helpful information, so with our new maps, drink coupons and tons of information, we were off and running again. Our next stop, lunch. We had read about a place called Mrs. Mac's Kitchen. This sounded like the perfect place for us.

The atmosphere was awesome, the food was great and we got to try there famous Key Lime Freeze and the Key Lime pie. Both were the perfect way to start off our adventure on the Keys.

At this point, it was time to put the top down, enjoy the beautiful weather, take in the sights and stop where ever we felt like. Along the Key's, in typical Castro fashion, we found our few oddities.

After crossing Seven Mile Bridge, we saw a beach that we had to double back and check out. It was just beautiful at Veteran Memorial Park. We spent a few minutes here walking in the warm watch and taking a few pictures.

The next beach stop was Bahia Honda State Park near Marathon, FL. The first order of business when we got there was to immediately get our swim suits on. It was too perfect of a day not to enjoy the water just a little. We explored the park and learned about the railroad system that was created & built in the early 1900's. It was so fun to walk around, enjoy the sun and spend a little time at the beach.

We made it to Key West around 4pm and checked into our uber-sheik hotel that Terri had found for us, the Truman Hotel. After getting checked in, settled in, and cleaned up, we headed out to explore and grab some dinner. So we headed down Duval St. This street is full of fun shops, restaurants, bars, everything.

We walked around checking out the shops, getting ideas for dinner and just enjoying the weather and Key West. As we were walking we came upon Vino's on Duval. Terri had seen this place while checking out places in Key West and it was a perfect place for us to grab a drink and appetizer and just hang out on the front porch.

After our drink and quick bit, we were back walking Duval Street. We made it all the way down to the end near Mallory Square and started to head back. The night ended quite succeessfully with a brick oven pizza at Onlywood off Duval Street and another Hard Rock shot glass to continue our collection and we still had two days left to explore the islands.
